Clik here to view.Today is a national public holiday in Iceland. It is also the last day of the country’s biggest travel weekend of the summer.
There have been festivals and gatherings all over Iceland this weekend and some visitors to the country may have been wondering what was going on with so few people in Reykjavik, so many shops closed and so much traffic on country roads.
Verslunarmannahelgin (the tradesmen’s weekend) occurs around the first Monday of each August and is unusual in that it is not a religious holiday. It was invented as a special weekend for the country’s tradespeople, such as shopkeepers. Since then it has morphed into a huge festival weekend, with the ironic consequence that many shops, bars and restaurants are much busier than usual.
Tomorrow is a normal work day.
