Today is Good Friday, and a public holiday in all of the Nordic countries.

Although schools and offices are closed, Easter is a very popular travel weekend; meaning that a lot of shops and catering establishments are open and a variety of festivals and cultural events are taking place. Among them is the Aldrei For Eg Sudur music festival in Isafjordur, Iceland. The small north-western town’s population doubles over Easter.

In the Christian faith, Good Friday is the day Jesus was crucified before being resurrected on Easter Sunday. The English name Good Friday translates as Long Friday in the Scandinavian languages and many in the region find the English name quite funny. After all, what is good about the crucifixion of the Lord? Answers on a postcard, please!
